Today is your last change to enter!
Last month, Bus Hostel, a brand new hostel in Reykjavik Iceland, invited three travel bloggers, Shing from Hostelbookers.com, Lindsay McCormik for Traveldudes.com and Frankie Bird for Budgettraveller.org as well as Anders Bergh, a professional photographer from trendy Copenhagen on a five day thrilling Volcano Hopping adventure in Iceland. I had the pleasure of putting together their itinerary and I decided to fill it with the most exciting volcano adventures I could think of in Iceland. And I can think of quite a few!!!
Wow air – the Icelandic low fare airlines flew in our bloggers and photographers to Reykjavik Iceland, just like they are going to fly you and your best friend in if you win.
Day 2 of Volcano Hopping: January 23rd 1973
After enjoying their first evening at the opening reception of Bus Hostel they got a 4x4 car from the SAD cars car rental to start their Volcano Hopping. This day they drove to South-Iceland where they met …, their guide from South Iceland Adventures. He took them sailing to the Westman Islands (Vestmannaeyjar), islands just south of the Icelandic coast that became famous one night forty years ago, January 23rd 1973 when the earth opened up just a few hundred meters behind one of the houses in town and started spewing fire and melted lava up in the air. The eruption lasted 6 months burying half of the town under lava and the rest under ashes. Amazingly, noone died!
They got to see the houses on the edge of the lava flow, climb the still warm volcano and enjoy the breath taking view over the islands – and up to the volcanoes on shore where Eyjafjallajökull stands proud.
Day 3 of Volcano Hopping: Meet the beast!
Eyjafjallajökull was the destination of day two. The surroundings of the infamous volcano that spewed her ashes all over Europe so millions of passangers where stranded is breathtaking. With glaciers, lava formations and amazing waterfalls the bloggers got to explore the beast up close and see where the melt water from under neath the 1.666 meter high glacier burst out creating a whole new valley in just a couple of hours. Crossing unbridged rivers and driving through black sandy deserts in a custom built super jeep it sure is a day to remember.
Remember Jules Vernes? And his sci-fi visions for the future? Many of his fantasies where actually realized in the last century – sending a man to the moon, exploring the deep blue in submarines… but it wasn’t until now that people actually found a passage to the center of the Earth. A crater you can actually descend into, 160 meters deep where you can follow a tunnel into a giant, cathedral like magma chamber. Yes, the actual insides of a volcano. And that is what is included in day 3. Not only that, the bloggers got to explore moon like landscapes used as back grounds in different Hollywood blockbusters, geothermal areas with mud springs and then relax in the Blue Lagoon afterwards and enjoy a fantastic dinner at their famous LAVA restaurant.
The last day they got to spend in the creative Reykjavik with it’s colourful houses, capital of Iceland and the northern most capital in the world. It is the home town of musicians Björk, SigurRós and Emilia Torrini, crime fiction authors Arnaldur Indriðason and Yrsa Sigurðardóttir and of course, creative accounting companies like Icesave... But let’s not go there... ;)
Day 6: Fly home, exhausted but happy :)
