A Norwegian Indian resting in rural Iceland
The more adventurous do their road trips on motorcycles. To me, traveling is about freedom and discovery and when riding a motorcycle your are both more free and you are more exposed to the environment, the wind, the rain, the smell ... you travel with all your senses exposed.
I had this dream of crossing Sahara on a motorcycle. But with a wife and five kids, they're hard to fit on a motorcycle, even though I'd have a sidecar, so it hasn't made the top of the priority list. Yet. Since there's a ferry from Europe to both Iceland and the Faroe Islands, those Islands are an exciting destination for adventurers and bikers.
An Indian riding Norwegian went on an adventure alone in August 2007 driving through Norway, Iceland and the Faroe Islands. His travel diary can be found on his blog The Indian News with loads of pictures and stories. The picture at the top is from his trip and so is this video he shot driving one of the gravel roads. It looks like it's shot near Djúpavatn which is a popular rally route, not a part of the main high way.
And finally, one nostalgic recording of Björk and the Sugarcubes singing "Motorcycle Mama" live at a concert in Reykjavik in 1991. Just for inspiration :)
